National Bridge Action Day

SEIU Healthcare Michigan members joined over 700 activists from Good Jobs Now along with faith and community leaders 11_17_11for the November 17th National Bridge Action Day. Calling on Congress to pass the American Jobs Act, that would bring over $900 million to Michigan and create tens of thousands of jobs rather than continue tax breaks that enrich the 1% and create no jobs for the 99%.

President Marge Faville address the crowd:

Members Vote to Approve Fair and Equal Initiative

SEIU Members are celebrating a huge victory with the passing of the Fair and Equal Initiative. Members voted 4 to 1 in favor of the initiative that will make dues an even 2.5 % percent, with a $55 cap, for members across the board. "I'm extremely excited about the huge number of members who made their voices heard in this important vote. This is a big step forward for our local and for the future of our union," President Marge Faville, RN said. More members participated in this vote than any other in the history of the local. "I counted hundreds and hundreds of ballots today and it was all worth it," said Executive Board Member Marsha Weston "This is definitely a step in the right direction."

Oak Pointe Member Going Back to Work

Ronald Miller has something to smile about. After being unjustly terminated eight months ago, he’s finally where he wants to be – back to work at Oak Pointe Villa. The floor care specialist, who has worked at the facility for 16 years, was awarded back pay and is glad to be working again in a tough economy. “I’m happy that I had a union fighting for me and that the grievance process worked,” he said.

Grandvue Members Show SEIU pride

Grandvue
When asked by management to represent their facility in their local parade, worksite leaders Freida Gibbard and Wilma Shepard agreed. But they weren't going to do it without showing some SEIU pride. They pulled out their purple umbrellas and hats and marched not only as Grandvue Medical Care Facility workers but as proud union members. "We are proud to be healthcare workers and we belong to SEIU HCMI," they said.

The People's Protest

Join us, Wednesday, March 16th to stand up and fight for our rights!

SEIU rally
Across the country, Republicans and CEOs are using a bad economy to punish workers, the elderly and the poor. Instead of creating jobs, they're steamrolling over people and stripping them of their basic rights. In Wisconsin and Ohio, people are standing up and fighting back. Now it's our turn. We're converging on our state Capitol for a massive protest to fight for our rights, a fair economy and to make our voices heard!

Want to join us? Get on The People's Bus, Wednesday, March 16th. We'll have several staging locations across the state. To RSVP,  call (866) 734-8466 and tell them you want to get on The People's Bus and fight for our rights!  Want more information? Sign up here or visit us on Facebook

Messages of Solidarity

Republican Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, has declared all-out war on unionized public employees. But it's not just union members at risk; it's the services these members provide-whether that be as teachers, public safety personnel or home health care workers. As tens of thousands of people continue to demonstrate in Wisconsin, we're asking members here in Michigan to send a message to your SEIU brothers and sisters who have been fighting for their rights outside the Capitol all week.

Here's a GREAT segment on the current power struggle in Wisconsin and what it means for our future.

Feb Council Mtg

Members from the Metro-Detroit area came together recently for our monthly Council Meeting. This month’s meeting was hosted by members at Hamilton Nursing Home in Detroit. Guest speaker Pat Thompson from the United Way discussed issues of worker justice and offered advice for dealing with problems at work.  A friendly competition was sparked as members played a game of jeopardy with a black history theme. The event ended with a discussion of recent union victories and ways to get involved. If your facility would like to host our next council meeting, contact Mayra DeLeon at (313) 963-3847.
