Healthcare Reform in Action – Debunking Myths and Expanding Benefits for Working Families
Recently, Michigan’s largest employer, Mercy Health Partners, began to communicate with workers about changes that would happen as pieces of the Affordable Care Act are rolled out over the next four years.
In a communication to SEIU Healthcare Michigan Members, details about expanded coverage that will become effective on January 1, 2011 for about 1,800 workers at MHP was explained. Just some of the positive changes for healthcare consumers are:
· Dependant children will now be covered under a worker’s insurance until the end of the year in which they turn 26 years old.
· Annual and lifetime maximums for essential health benefits will be eliminated. This means there will no longer be a dollar amount limit on these services for workers or their families.
· In-network preventative care benefits will be provided at no cost.
SEIU members did amazing work to ensure that the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. We should all be very proud of the positive impact we’ve had on our families, friends, and neighbor’s health.
